Ephesians 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.
Following the conversion of Constantine, the loyalty of Christians in the Persian/Sassanian Empire came to be looked upon with suspicion by Rome, and this suspicion led to tragic consequences. The tradition of the martyrdom of Simon and Jude honors as well other faithful followers whose lives are relatively unknown to us.
In our current political environment, the story of Simon and Jude may provoke questions about how our own nation treats religious minorities. History shows us the painful consequences of fear and suspicion of the other. Perhaps the reconciling Christ, who through his humanity, has torn down the dividing wall between two supposedly irreconcilable groups, will show us a new and unexpected path to unity and peace.
MOVING FORWARD: Call or write one of your best friends and thank them for being part of your life and story.
Today the Church remembers Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles.
