THURSDAY, December 28      The Feast of the Holy Innocents

Matthew 2:18 A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.

Today the church remembers the Holy Innocents—infants and children under the age of two who were brutally murdered under the direction of King Herod. Herod was petrified of losing his throne to this purported “king of the Jews,” this infant sought by strange men from the East and about whom even the shepherds spoke. Since Herod couldn’t find the baby Jesus (who became, along with his parents, a refugee in Egypt), he chose to kill every child in and around Bethlehem in the hopes of snaring the baby king in his trap.

This story highlights the tragedy of humanity’s quest for power. In our attempts to gain wealth, prestige, or control, we manipulate others for our own benefit—because we are afraid of being out of control, poor, or unknown. We hurt others. We take more than our fair share and leave others with less. And Rachel weeps.

MOVING FORWARD: Make a donation of diapers to a local pantry or shelter.
