Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
When we listen to other people’s hopes, we become steadier in our own. If we pay careful attention to the words of Jesus (who is the truth and way and life) we find ourselves. I know this is true because I’ve experienced this steadying of hope in my own life.
I heard God’s word every day when I was growing up. I also discovered that my life forms a narrative, an open book that anyone can read. Whether that story is worth paying attention to depends on whether my life stands as an authentic retelling of the biblical story of sin and redemption, of loss and gain, of the faith, hope, love, and freedom found at the feet of Jesus. If my life is a book, if your life is too, then people will compulsively pay attention and be encouraged, steadied, and strengthened by the story of Jesus they read in our faces, in our hearts, and in our lives.
MOVING FORWARD: Write down the most important thing you have heard about Jesus on a sticky note. Put this on your bathroom mirror or on the inside of your front door.
