MONDAY, May 28

Matthew 13:51-52 “Have you understood all this?” They answered, “Yes.” And [Jesus] said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Two of the three parables in this portion of Matthew involve people selling everything they have and investing the revenue into something else—a field, with a secret treasure hidden in it, and a single pearl, the true value of which may not be clear to the seller.

These parables would make perfect sense to my mom. An avid garage sale aficionado and savvy entrepreneur, my mom built a whole business around seeing hidden value in what others perceived as “just junk.” A brass lamp, bought at a garage sale for $5, can be sold for ten times the price with just a little polishing—but you have to know what you’re looking for.

MOVING FORWARD: How is God’s kingdom like a field, a pearl, a brass lamp? Are our eyes open to the hidden value around us, or do we go about missing these treasures? How might we look more closely today?
