Psalm 91. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. (NRSV)

Psalms give us a common language to express our feelings, and can serve as instruments of healing. Psalm 91 reminds me of an image my mother gave me as a child, of a guardian angel watching over two children crossing a broken bridge. She placed it above the entrance to my room and told me that God had sent this angel to watch over me as I slept.

Years later, this image and psalm came back to me during my wife’s bout with thyroid cancer. The morning of her surgery, my mother had me recite Psalm 91 as she anointed my wife with oil and laid hands on us in prayer. It was an emotional experience; I felt as if the angels I had just prayed about had been commanded to stand guard. This experience stayed with my wife and I through her entire treatment and recovery.

Today, the guardian angel picture is now in my daughter’s room, and I told her the same thing my mother told me. While we cannot protect ourselves or those we love entirely from harm, we can share a language that provides hope and calm in the face of danger or uncertainty.
