MONDAY, January 29

John 6:39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.

My first memory is vivid. I am in my room, the floor scattered with colored wooden blocks. Red, green, yellow, orange, and purple. All different shapes. I want to build something with every shape and color. But I can’t reach one of the blocks that is under my crib in the corner of the room. To reach it, I have to crawl under the crib. I am afraid of getting trapped, pinned between the floor and the metal springs that hold the crib’s mattress in place. But I do it anyway.

Jesus comes and stretches out his life to reach each of his sheep. Our good shepherd defies ravenous wolves to bring us all together as God’s creation, like my wooden blocks of every shape and color. Jesus hopes we will play well together. He prays we will build bridges, not walls. Will we answer the Lord’s prayer?

The kingdom of heaven is as near as we want it to be, as close as we let it be.

MOVING FORWARD: What is your earliest memory? Share it with friends, spouse, or children. Offer to listen to their earliest memories too.
