SUNDAY, October 29      21 Pentecost

Deuteronomy 34:1, 5 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan…Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command.

Moses has delivered his final words of wisdom to the people of Israel. In this last journey from Moab, to the mountaintop from which he will see the Promised Land, Moses goes up. The final journey mirrors all of the important journeys of Moses’ life. He is born in the Nile valley and is given a new life when he goes up the mountain to meet God in the burning bush. Moses goes on to lead the people out of Egypt and returns to that same mountain, ascending it again to receive the Law and Covenant. And now, at the end of his life, Moses goes up again. Throughout the Pentateuch (the first five books in the Bible), Moses is the mediator, intercessor, the advocate who speaks with God face to face, the one who goes up on our behalf.

The journey of ascent into the presence of God becomes the work of all Israel—and through Israel, going up becomes the work of all nations and peoples.

MOVING FORWARD: Go up to your own holy place today, and dwell in the presence of God.
