John 15:17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
Jesus fortifies his disciples with commandments to love one another. But his words also serve to strengthen them in confronting the cold truth about the world’s hostility toward Jesus—and toward them for following this carpenter’s son. Jesus mentions this kind of hatred seven times throughout the chapter, ensuring the disciples really understand the gravity of it. While rarely subjected to the hatred Jesus experiences, the disciples would come to know rejection and persecution because of their connection with him and because of the world’s enmity toward God. Jesus’ followers will be bound to him and to each other in love and in suffering.
If we seek to belong to Christ, we will need his nourishing love and teachings to fortify us against the cold.
MOVING FORWARD: Make plans to have breakfast this week with a friend or family member you haven’t seen in a while.
Today the Church remembers Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles.
