2 John 5 But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another.
First, I think it means action. Abiding in love or being in love is not the same as walking in love. The former seems to imply being static; the latter requires movement. We are people who grow and change, and walking in love means adjusting our own lives to stay in relationship with God and with one another even as those changes occur.
Beyond action, I think walking in love implies fearlessness. As John said in his first letter, “Perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18), and loving without fear means reaching beyond our comfort zones to see the image of God in everyone, not just those who look like us or agree with us.
GIVING BACK: How far will you walk in love today? Give a gift to Forward Movement to support our ministry of providing resources to hospitals and prisons. Text FDD to 41-444 to donate.
