THURSDAY, June 29      Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles

John 21:17b Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

One morning a student at the seminary where I now teach part-time greeted me, “Good morning, child of God.” In response to my look of surprise, he said that a speaker in chapel had encouraged the seminarians to greet each other that way to train their minds to see every person as a child of God. This method of greeting would fundamentally alter our hearts and behavior if we literally saw every person as God’s own precious child. The same is true with Jesus’ words, “Feed my sheep.” Feed MY sheep.

If I picture myself being charged by Jesus personally to tend and feed his own lambs, I feel the weight and gravity of this enormous honor and responsibility. But all sorts of things can distract me—the success of the sheep-feeding operation, the time and energy it will take on my part. When I focus on those issues, I forget about the lamb, Jesus’ own lamb.

Jesus loves that lamb—loves you and me—and asks us as individuals and as communities to figure out how to feed each other. I need to remember Jesus’ simple but powerful mandate in his appearance to Peter: “Feed my sheep.”

MOVING FORWARD: Try using, “Good morning, child of God!” when you greet your friends, loved ones, or even total strangers today! Let us know what happens by tagging your story with #ForwardDaybyDay.
