FRIDAY, November 3

Nehemiah 2:17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we may no longer suffer disgrace.”

My friend—we’ll call him Bob—works for a financial management company. His appearance isn’t striking or extraordianary. But he is one of the most attractive people I know, with warm, smiling eyes that set you right to ease. It wasn’t always this way.

Two decades ago, Bob was sleeping in a park. Alcohol had left his life in ruins. He thought he drank to cope with pain. His moment of clarity was when he realized that drinking was the source of his pain. God did not wave a magic wand that day—Bob’s road to sobriety and health was long and arduous, guided by God’s unwavering grace and the support of many other people.

Many of us have found ourselves in the ruins. A divorce. An addicted child. The death of a loved one. A career setback. But as Nehemiah’s story reminds us, even in our ruins, God creates a new beginning.

MOVING FORWARD: Does a 12-Step community meet at your church? Leave a tray of cookies or another snack as a gift of hospitality this week.
