Mark 13:33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.
Jesus goes on to tell us to, “Keep awake…or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly.” How do we stay alert? Jesus compares our wait for him to a master going on a trip and leaving his slaves in charge of his important work. As Christians, we are called to do the work Jesus has started on earth, and as Paul reminds us, we have been given every spiritual gift necessary to complete the job.
We are often tempted to take a break and rest—so many people in our world are doing important work, and the job is nowhere near complete. Maybe what Jesus is trying to tell us today is that prayerfully, patiently watching doesn’t mean simply waiting passively for Jesus to return. Advent is also a time to keep up the good work Jesus has asked us to do.
