John 1:38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
Each answer only takes me so far, as if the answers are compass points in my life but the actual question is the path I’m traveling. I know that if I don’t let the question live within me, I tend to become stuck, settled in place and asleep to the beauty and mystery of life. I must not presume to have the final and forever answer.
In my younger years, my answers to Jesus’ question were more concrete and definable—not so much anymore. Jesus’ question is simple but not easily answered. Maybe Jesus doesn’t expect this question to be answered—maybe he asks us this question to keep us pondering, wondering, and musing—a question to keep us awake and open.
MOVING FORWARD: What are you looking for? What is your heart’s desire?
Today the Church remembers John and Charles Wesley, Priests, 1791, 1788.
