THURSDAY, August 3

Acts 16:33 At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay.

When I was a junior in high school, I got really excited about fly-fishing. I learned to tie my own flies and made my own rod. I wanted to be a good fisherman. I wanted to prove that I could do it—but some days, I would fish for hours and catch nothing. On those bad days, I would yell at myself and throw things.

Years later, I realized why I was so mad. I was afraid that I would not be able to be a fisher of people. If I couldn’t catch fish, how could I draw people to Christ?

I wanted to be like the disciples, inspiring and encouraging people to radically alter their lives and the world. In my worry and self-disappointment, I missed what mattered most: the transformational love of God made incarnate in Jesus. Those words make my California ears recoil in postmodern rejection, but my heart sings out that they are true. Now, having become a more seasoned fisherman, I know the fish will come. All I have to do is cast the line.

MOVING FORWARD: Enjoy these last days of summer, and go fishing today! If fishing is not your thing, try fishing for a new friend.
