MONDAY, October 30

Revelation 1:17-18 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.”

The Book of Revelation frequently suffers from a reputation as the crazy uncle of the New Testament family. However, as our lectionary begins to guide us carefully through the shiny and sparkly bits of Revelation—and past some of the dark and difficult ones—we should remember that interpreters from Saint Augustine to Allan Boesak have understood Revelation as a crucial, reforming text.

Revelation is a text that can powerfully reorient us when we forget who is Lord; who is in charge; who is Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. To those who are being crushed under the heel of empire or beneath the wheel of industry and commerce, Revelation speaks comfort and reassurance; the Son of Man places his right hand upon our furrowed brows, and life for the faithful is the promise of the Living One. To the powers of the world whose days are numbered, the text defiantly cries out, “You are big and bad and scary, but we see through you!” And thanks be to God for that.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend some time with Revelation in the coming days.
