WEDNESDAY, December 30

3 John 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good.

My father has been my most enduring teacher, and his lessons resonate in my head decades after his death. A self-taught man, his primary focus was on providing for our family and caring for his extended family as well. My father looms large in my memory.

Dad’s constant advice was to look up to the good examples of kindness and love that were all around me rather than at people who did not work hard and got by on charm or chance. Dad pushed his children to aspire to do something substantive with our intellect and energy and to help others struggling in a sluggish job market.

My fondest memory is reading the daily newspaper with my father in the mornings. I read the comics and the advice columns, and Dad pointed out the human-interest stories that showcased leadership in difficult situations. Even then, he wanted me to embrace examples of strong moral leaders in ordinary settings. My darling dad wanted me to know that I could stretch myself to be good…and do good.

May he rest in peace, and rise in glory. Amen.
