SATURDAY, December 30

3 John 11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

Today’s readings offer two miracle stories: Elijah healing the widow’s son, and Jesus healing the royal officer’s son. I have to admit that I am uncomfortable when I read biblical stories of healing the sick. I feel like I have a strong and abiding faith, but I once battled a sinus infection for three weeks.

Then I remember that healing isn’t always physical. I have experienced healing in relationships that I thought were irrevocably broken. I have been healed from wounds in my heart and mind that kept me separate from the love of God. And I have personally experienced the healing power of prayer.

Healing happens and prayer works—and if we have eyes to see, we will see miracles all around us. They may not be quite as dramatic as the healings in today’s readings, but we are encouraged to imitate what is good because good comes from God.

MOVING FORWARD: What needs healing within you? Talk to God today about it.
