Psalm 107:29 He stilled the storm to a whisper and quieted the waves of the sea.
On one level, the stories of Jesus calming the wind and waves echo our evening psalm, which says that in the worst of life’s storms, God brings peace. Whether the storm is quieted, or our hearts are quieted, God stills the turbulence. When peace calms the storm, we know grace. On another level, Jesus’ non-anxiousness and ability to sleep through the raging storm shows us it is possible to experience deep and restorative peace during upheaval.
The medieval picture depicts a Viking longboat, looking as ferocious as the storm, with its dragon-shaped prow carving through the rough water. But Jesus still sleeps peacefully in this boat, and we know why. Our hearts know the story, even when our heads don’t remember. Jesus and his friends are ultimately in God’s hands, and God stills the storms and quiets the waves on the oceans and in our hearts.
MOVING FORWARD: Make an artistic representation of God calming storms.
