SATURDAY, June 30

Psalm 33:10 The Lord brings the will of the nations to naught; he thwarts the designs of the peoples.

Every person I’ve ever met—every one of them—wants to be in control of something. Emotions, career, life’s course—you name it, we want to control it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but in a culture obsessed with harnessing and controlling literally every single thing, the psalmist offers us a bit of timely, if not contrarian, wisdom.

In my own life of faith, my need to control is often cleverly disguised as the need to contain. We can’t move too fast or we might fail! We can’t dream too big, or we might be disappointed! But then God shows up somewhere I hadn’t planned, at a time I hadn’t allotted, and sometimes in the faces of people I’d rather not deal with. The plans I had envisioned are frustrated. I am brought face to face with the fact that I am not in control of God—or much of anything, really. This truth, like so many important truths, is hard for me to accept, but it is very good news!

MOVING FORWARD: When has God shown up and taken control of your plans? Share this story with us by using #ForwardDayByDay.
