Revelation 4:1-2 After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the spirit, and there in heaven stood a throne, with one seated on the throne!
In these passages, we see two doors—one earthly, one heavenly; one closed, one open. Both doors open into a liturgy disclosing God’s presence. One opens into the eucharistic liturgy, a banquet in the presence of the Son of Man. The other opens into the very presence of God and the heavenly liturgy, toward which our eucharistic practice points.
At one door, Christ pleads with us to open our doors—ourselves—to him. At the other door, we find heaven mysteriously open to us. We are invited to approach and enter into the praise and the presence of the One who conquers, so that we too might persevere when suffering comes.
MOVING FORWARD: There will probably be quite a few knocks on our doors tonight. Show the love of Christ to all who pass your way this night—and always.
