SUNDAY, December 31      First Sunday after Christmas

John 1:16-17 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

It’s the end of another year—time to reflect on the joys and challenges of this year and to dream about the year ahead. I gave up on making resolutions several years ago, but I still set goals for the coming year. Spend less money in restaurants. Take more vacations. Read twenty-five books for fun. Basically, my goals encapsulate things I think will make me a better person.

My annual goals (and to be honest, usually my disappointments over the previous year) have to do with rules and regulations—things I think I should or shouldn’t do or be. But Jesus has come to earth so I don’t have to do or be any of those things.

I have received grace upon grace upon grace, and when I wake up tomorrow in 2018, I will know that I am a beloved child of God. For that, I am truly blessed.

MOVING FORWARD: Resolve to believe this: God loves you. Period.
