Luke 24:40-42 And when [Jesus] had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish.
In this final reading from Luke, we can understand the disciples’ confusion; they can’t quite believe Jesus is back from the dead. What better way to convince them that he is not a ghost than to eat something solid right in front of them? Ghosts don’t eat—but real people do.
After dinner, Jesus goes to Bethany—his de facto base of operations with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus—to be among both friends and disciples before he ascends to heaven. Bethany is where Martha provides extraordinary hospitality, where Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with oil, where Lazarus is called back from the dead. Is it any wonder that this is where Jesus wants to be?
Joy, disbelief, and wonder combine with real events and real places to make up the core of our faith. For these, and all our many blessings, thanks be to God.
MOVING FORWARD: Congratulations! You have finished reading the Gospel of Luke. Give thanks for the gift of God’s Holy Word.
