THURSDAY, August 31

Mark 14:26 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

I love the image of Jesus singing with his disciples. I wonder what the melody was like. Was it modal? Minor? Major? Fast? How old was it? Did they clap? Was it a psalm? Did they harmonize or sing in unison? While I wonder about these things, I am content to know that they sang together after the meal. It sounds pleasant, a calm moment in the midst of a tumultuous journey—Mark’s Gospel moves so fast. For just this moment, they are singing all together.

Here at the end of our time together, I invite you to sing with me. Our song has no melody, and you can sing along wherever you are right now. Our song together is this: Three deep breaths. I will do it with you, right this minute. One. Two. Three.

This breathing song is ancient, universal, and most often goes unnoticed. But it is the song that unites us, breaking up the indifferent pace and drawing us closer to the One who paused to sing. Thank you all for sharing your time and singing along with me. Amen.

MOVING FORWARD: Sing a favorite song or hymn with someone you love today. Share your song with #ForwardDaybyDay.
