FRIDAY, January 4

John 14:13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be gloried in the Son.

In the last years of my mother’s earthly life, she granted me power of attorney. She knew she needed help dealing with finances and living arrangements. The honor of her trust carried the weight of decision-making, especially as her dementia prevented good conversations to sort through options. She relied on me to choose what was best. I had to rely on what I knew about her, what she valued and needed, to make those choices on her behalf.

Jesus grants us similar responsibility over our own lives. We can have a good chat with Jesus about our options, but honestly, an answer is not likely to float down on a dove. We must rely on our understanding of God’s nature to know what to ask for and make decisions that will build up a safe, loving, peaceful kingdom that glorifies its Creator.

MOVING FORWARD: Is it time to update your or your family’s advanced directives? This is one of the most compassionate things we can do for our loved ones.
