SATURDAY, November 4

Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

Love makes us vulnerable. Sometimes agonizingly so. A friend still aches from the loss of her only son. Our conversations often return to her deep sorrow. She wonders aloud why God would allow such bitter tears. And so do I.

In Jesus, God redeems sorrow and suffering. God is love. Created in God’s image, we are fully ourselves when we love with abandon. C. S. Lewis said that love will stretch and even break our hearts.

The alternative to giving ourselves in love is to withhold ourselves from deep attachment. Although this kind of detachment may guard us from grief and heartache, it also isolates us in a tomb of loneliness and indifference. We trade tender hearts of flesh for cold hearts of stone. God takes us into a divine embrace and comforts us. God wipes away our tears. God’s love heals and enlarges hearts shattered by loving.

When we love, we become most truly who we are created to be. And we eventually discover that in Christ, our love for each other transcends the horizon of death. Love wins.

MOVING FORWARD: Pray for Christ to soften your heart.
