2 Peter 1:8 For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The term godliness Peter uses is derived from the Greek word eusebia, which can also indicate sacred awe, fear, and reverence—it doesn’t mean physical acts of piety but rather deep spiritual connection with God.
Although knowledge, self-control, and the other fruits of the Spirit are important, Peter reminds us that the bedrock of our faith is love. Without love, we can’t even begin to build a faith that will stand the test of time. The stronger our love is, the stronger our faith becomes and the more our spiritual fruit grows.
MOVING FORWARD: How is your spiritual fruit tree looking these days? Do you need to prune some branches or fertilize your roots?
Today the Church remembers John of Damascus, Priest, c. 760.
