Psalm 147:4 He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names.
If I can’t say the right names for two kids, a husband, a dog, and three cats, I can’t imagine counting the stars. And yet, here is God—healer of the brokenhearted, lifter of the lowly, and shaper of the mountains, calling each star by name. God bears the weight of the universe—and still knows us, each of us—our hearts and hurts, our desires and defeats.
As a child, I wished upon the first star I saw in the night sky, and I catch myself doing the same as an adult. I wonder what it would be like to think of my wishing star in a different way: Not as a twinkling object of childhood rhymes nor a scientist’s luminous ball of gas, but as an awe-inspiring part of creation with a name all its own, beheld and beloved by God.
MOVING FORWARD: Spend some time outside tonight looking at and praying with the stars.
