Luke 11:24-26 When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but not finding any, it says, “I will return to my house from which I came.” When it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first.
Jesus is helping us understand that we need to keep our spiritual houses in order so that evil spirits, passions, and destructive behaviors do not take up permanent residence. But none of us do the work of cleaning up and cleaning out on our own.
Church provides a structure for spiritual discipline. So does participation in groups like AA, quiet walks with God, a morning routine of Bible reading and prayer. Volunteering and spending time with family and friends all help to keep our spiritual cobwebs at bay. Doubt, emptiness, and fatigue will still surface, but with a sound spiritual foundation, the ground under us will have a better chance of staying firm.
MOVING FORWARD: We are nearly halfway through reading the Gospel of Luke together. How is this experience helping you keep your spiritual house in order?
