MONDAY, September 4

James 2:1 My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ?

James asks an interesting and challenging question that confronts us with some hard realizations. Whether we realize it or not, we behave as if the kingdom of God is only for some and not for others. Our actions speak of this favoritism when we choose who receives our attention, who we sit next to on a subway train, which homeless person is most deserving of the change in our pocket or leftovers from a restaurant meal.

We make these choices despite knowing that Jesus never hesitates to open his arms or lay hands on flesh with the priceless offer of hope and healing. How can we say we believe in Jesus Christ and yet not act as he does? This is what happens when we think about Jesus but act like people who have never heard the good news of the risen Christ.

What if we tried, for the next twenty-four hours, to think and act as Christ does? How much wider would our hearts and minds open? How much more love might we find—not just for others, but for ourselves as well?

MOVING FORWARD: Think of and carry out one or two concrete ways you can act like Jesus in the next twenty-four hours.
