THURSDAY, October 5

2 Kings 18:37 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

This reading from 2 Kings reminds me of the scene from the last volume in the Harry Potter series, The Deathly Hallows. Hogwarts is besieged by the Death Eaters, and Voldemort’s piercing voice is heard by those inside the walls. The voice seeks to overwhelm, undermine, and offer false promises. Morale falls as a veil of despair descends upon the resisters. In the same way, the voice of the Rabshakeh speaking in the language of Judah seeks to undermine the people’s confidence in their leader Hezekiah and in their God; the taunts call up the question uttered by their ancestors in the wilderness and oft-repeated throughout history: “Is the Lord among us or not?” (Exodus 17:7b).

When our own hopes stand besieged, we may wonder, “Is the Lord among us or not?” Competing voices offer us security and protection at a price. However, the witness of Hezekiah teaches us that we are to courageously turn to the One who has called us.

MOVING FORWARD: Share a memory of God’s goodness providing fertile ground for your hopes. Share it with us on social media by using #ForwardDaybyDay.
