John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

While working in New Zealand, I had a pet sheep named Buddy. He was rejected by his mother, so I bottle-fed him when he was a lamb. Buddy became convinced that he was (and behaved as though he was) part sheep, part dog, and part human.

Buddy was creative and tenacious in his will to wander—to stray from home. Though his range was hemmed in by the ocean on one side, Buddy would often make his way through a fence opening to find some sheeply delights—other sheep with whom to frolic, new, green shoots to munch, crisp, wandering streams to explore.

How often I act just like Buddy: wandering through open gates, well-intentioned but easily distracted—so very sheep-like. What an apt—and comforting—metaphor that Jesus is our good shepherd, bringing us back into the fold, searching for us when we become lost, providing nourishment and nurturing for our journey, and ultimately, laying down his life for us.

MOVING FORWARD: Learn about the process of shepherding and raising sheep (if you can, visit a sheep farm!). How can you be less like a sheep or more like a helper for the shepherd?
