WEDNESDAY, January 6 The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Matthew 2:2 For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.

I have always been skeptical about the claim that the stars hold secret information about my personality or my future. Still, every now and then, I’ll come across a horoscope or some description of people with my astrological sign (it’s Virgo), and, I admit, I enjoy comparing the description with reality. Occasionally, I even come away with some insight.

There are multiple ways for each of us to find Jesus. The wise men found Jesus through studying the stars. I was born into an Episcopal family, and so I grew up hearing about Jesus every Sunday morning. Others find Jesus through study or a conversion experience.

I’m not sure whether to trust astrology to find the truth, but I am convinced we can trust that the truth will find us. Every time I think I understand God and how things work in this world, something comes along and surprises me. Other people and other stories show me there are many ways to stumble upon the truth.

O God, who revealed your only Son to the Gentiles by the leading of a star, grant that we, who know you now by faith, may enjoy the splendor of your love. Amen.

Today the Church remembers The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
