SATURDAY, January 6     The Feast of the Epiphany

Matthew 2:3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him.

For African-American children in Prince Edward County in the 1950s, there were not enough wise men or women. The few who spoke up were ignored.

Fear is the enemy of faith. Rather than integrate following the Brown v. Board of Education decision, school leaders adopted a policy they called Massive Resistance and shut down public education. Public schools remained closed for five years. Most whites found refuge in a whites-only private school supported by local and state tax dollars. More than 2,000 black children were left without any educational options.

I met one of those children many years later. The public schools had closed when he was in first grade. The man had a hard time writing his name. But he worked two jobs and was a preacher who refused pay. “The Bible says, ‘Freely you have received, now freely give,’ ” he explained.

What did Prince Edward County fear? What did Herod fear?

MOVING FORWARD: What are you afraid of? How does your fear impact your relationship with Jesus?

PRAY for your own diocese.

Today the Church remembers The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
