TUESDAY, February 6

John 8:6b Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

Maybe he’s collecting himself, like pretending to point out an interesting view when you’re out of breath on a walk. Maybe Jesus kneels and writes a note to God: Do I really have to deal with these jerks? Maybe he traces some text-speak and an emoji that none of the elders understand, so it isn’t recorded for posterity.

We don’t read scripture with the intent of always coming to the same conclusion. Each time I hear this story, I imagine a different scenario for Jesus. Even the outrageous ones bring me closer to the story—and deeper in faith.

Next week, we embark upon a journey of reading scripture together through the Good Book Club. Forward Day by Day will move through the books of Luke and Acts each day. God’s word invites us into conversation, into connection with the holy, and into community with one another. Each time we read scripture, we discover something new—about it, about ourselves, and about our understanding of the world. Be ready for Jesus to write his words on your heart.

MOVING FORWARD: Invite a friend or family member to read Luke and Acts along with you, beginning on Sunday.
