TUESDAY, March 6

Luke 12:48b From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.

People from Maya Angelou and John F. Kennedy to Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben have been credited for this famous line: “To whom much is given, much will be required.” But Jesus is the true author of the statement—and he says it three times in Luke’s Gospel (see also 8:18 and 19:26). In none of those instances do the words come off as particularly warm and fuzzy. Note Jesus’ very next words: “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!...Do you think I have come to bring peace?” Jesus is impatient, and his impatience is totally warranted.

God has given us more than we will ever fully comprehend. Knowing that, how might we respond to Jesus’ mandate today? May we always be ready to serve; may we always take the path Jesus would have us choose.

MOVING FORWARD: How does God want you to spend your time and energy, your health and passion? What are your special gifts given to you by God?
