FRIDAY, April 6     Friday in Easter Week

Acts 3:2 And a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate so that he could ask for alms from those entering the temple.

We are in danger of becoming like the nameless, faceless crowd passing through the Beautiful Gate to worship in the temple—all the while missing the presence of God just slightly off our well-worn path.

I vividly remember the day my clinical pastoral education group chose sites for our yearlong internships. The last site, a ministry that supported people experiencing homelessness, was the most chaotic. The noise and frenzy grabbed me, and over the next several months, this community fundamentally changed me.

Transformation often happens just to the side of my expectations. God has a way of showing up on the roadside, calling my attention to unexpected places. Many of us have grown so habituated to going, running, and doing all the things all at one time that we must now learn the spiritual disciplines of stopping to behold the world around us, just as it is—and being present to the presence of God.

MOVING FORWARD: Look at something familiar—your backyard, the nave at your church, your reflection in the bathroom mirror. Are you missing something miraculous hiding in plain sight?
