Luke 9:32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.
In both the epistle and the gospel today, Peter reminds us that bearing witness requires deliberate attentiveness. Occasionally, that attentiveness captures something supernatural or extraordinary. But most of the time, bearing witness means simply being present to those around us.
Whether faced with the extraordinary or the banal, the call for Christians is the same—listen to Jesus. We do this through our study of the life and teachings of Jesus and through steady prayer and community support, but we also gaze upon the veil, covering skin so lustrous and luminous that we can hardly bear to view it with our naked eye. We beg for the veil to remain in place because we know the dangerous thing we will surely do if we see the divine brilliance unfiltered: We will listen to Jesus.
MOVING FORWARD: When have you seen the brilliance of God unveiled?
Today the Church remembers The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
