SUNDAY, January 7      1 Epiphany

Mark 1:4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

How did we reach this wasteland? God had such a simple dream: We would live happily ever after. Now it seems every glass slipper is broken, shattered, and the shards tear our bare feet. Every apple is poisonous, offered by serpents who promise there are no strings attached, but we hear the rattle of chains. We are lost in the nightmare of Eden turned inside out.

And now this—the wilderness—that’s all we have left. This barren expanse is frightening beyond belief. The night is filled with the roar of lions who vow never to lie down with a lamb. All of the paths are crooked and the darkness knows our name. We feel its breath upon our throats.

It’s so dark now that we cannot see any colors at all. You are human. I am, too. There is only one answer. I reach for your hand, and our fingers interlock—an epiphany of skin touching skin. We are baptized in this same water. Lions fall silent.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend some extra time in prayer for your brothers and sisters in Christ, especially the newly baptized.
