SATURDAY, October 7

Matthew 8:24-25 A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but [Jesus] was asleep. And [the disciples] went and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

The outcry of Jesus’ terrified disciples echoes the cries of humanity to God throughout the ages: “Save us!” Jesus’ faithful response to this outcry continues throughout the gospels and in our lives. Jesus deeply cares that we are perishing. He is on a mission against death, and it should be no surprise that when Jesus leaves the boat after calming the sea, he walks straight into a struggle to liberate two demoniacs living tormented and isolated lives among the tombs.

Jesus’ mission against death is one that takes him into confrontation after confrontation with the forces that hold people in death, leads him to pain and isolation on a cross, and takes him to the tomb—a tomb that cannot hold him. How do Christians proclaim Christ’s victory over death in a world where we still see so much suffering and death? Perhaps, we might start by stepping forward to declare what Christ has done for us.

MOVING FORWARD: Declare the resurrection story that Jesus is working in your life. Share it with us by using #ForwardDaybyDay
