TUESDAY, November 7

Psalm 62:1 For God alone my soul in silence waits; from him comes my salvation.

My wife, daughter, and I were having an after-lunch stroll on a bayou. A pier extended out above the water. Our daughter walked a few paces ahead of us, oblivious to the fact that the boards ahead of her had deteriorated. She stopped just short of the rotten planks, suddenly realizing one more step would send her tumbling into the water, needing to be saved.

Needing saving doesn’t mean we’re bad. To need salvation means we must rely upon something beyond ourselves to survive and thrive. Learning to stand on our own two feet is important, but we must also learn all we can about what will hold us up—and what will send us head over heels into the swamp.

We frequently seek out unreliable footholds. After every career success, we find more rungs to climb. Power, status, and possessions eventually let us down. God sustains, heals, and restores us. From God alone comes salvation.

MOVING FORWARD: Give yourself the time to hear a word from God. Spend ten minutes in silence today.
