Matthew 22:37-40 [Jesus] said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’”
If all we have and are is God’s, by virtue of being made in God’s image, doesn’t it make sense that our hearts are God’s as well? And if our hearts are God’s, then shouldn’t our actions reflect the love of God that moves in us and consumes us?
The logic may be simple, but the teaching is hard. To keep the laws of God, our hearts must be filled with love for God. And this love requires constant attention and renewal, a continual “yes” to remain attentive and true to the other.
MOVING FORWARD: How do you pay attention to and renew your most important relationships? Is God inviting you to do some extra work on any of them?
