MONDAY, August 7

2 Samuel 7:2 The king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.”

During my senior year in college, I found myself in an unlikely setting. After a morning of snow skiing with my girlfriend’s family, we sat down for lunch at an exclusive club on top of the mountain. At our table were two senators, a real estate tycoon, a manufacturing mogul, a department store owner, and a former Miss Universe. As we ate gourmet food and drank fine wines, I listened to their conversation. The juxtaposition of the indoor opulence and the wild beauty outside made me nauseous. I couldn’t help feeling that the pine lodge shut out both God and neighbor.

I have encountered the divine in a variety of settings. I have felt God with me as I slept under the stars in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. I have felt God’s grace while tossing and turning on the streets of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. God showed me Christian community through a church in a jazz venue in Los Angeles. If I were to choose a place where I expect the divine presence, I would favor a tent over a house of cedar every single time.

God does not fear impermanence; neither should we.

MOVING FORWARD: Plan a camping trip.
