THURSDAY, September 7

Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

I am often amused by how much we praise God’s greatness while at the same time pigeonholing God into the narrowness of our very human expectations and imaginations. We expect God to do our bidding, in our time frame, and in the way we define as “good.” We are so much more interested in God acting out our will than we are in acting out God’s will for us.

We don’t realize God wants to do so much more for us than we could ask or imagine—and that God will act in a time frame requiring our patience and perseverance. Modern theologian Frederick Buechner writes, “Inhabitants of time that we are, we stand on such occasions with one foot in eternity. God, as Isaiah says (57:15), ‘inhabiteth eternity,’ but stands with one foot in time. The part of time where he stands most particularly is Christ, and thus in Christ we catch a glimpse of what eternity is all about, what God is all about, and what we ourselves are all about too.”

God is coming to you and has so much to give. All you have to do is trust—and wait. God never runs out of time, or love, or space. May you be blessed to know that today.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend ten extra minutes in prayer or study today. Be quiet and listen to God.
