WEDNESDAY, November 8

Matthew 13:58 And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief.

Jesus bombed with the hometown crowd. They couldn’t get past his position as Joseph and Mary’s kid. Maybe they just couldn’t bring themselves to ask for help. Asking for help exposes our vulnerabilities. And therein lies the rub—we’ve been taught to be strong and self-reliant.

Believing in Jesus involves recognizing our weaknesses and limitations. We cannot achieve our highest hopes and most tender desires all on our own. We yearn for a peace that seems to escape our merely human grasp. We burn for a justice that remains incomplete. We stretch toward a heartfelt compassion for people who unsettle us or put us off.

These highest hopes and most tender desires are actually God’s dream. Jesus invites us to participate in his holy mission of bringing reconciliation and healing to the whole world. He never expects us to do this beautiful, powerful work on our own.
