THURSDAY, February 8

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

On the Monday after Michael died, the Forward Movement staff gathered at the conference table as we always do at 10 a.m. We read the meditation from Forward Day by Day. Normally we pray for specific requests sent to our online prayer chapel from around the world. I suggested that on this day, we say only the names from the online list so we could move on to our own grief for our coworker. A father of two, a husband, a brilliant designer, and a seeker who had finally found his faith home, Michael died suddenly at the age of 46.

A colleague held up the page of prayers, a catch in her throat. The online prayers are all about Michael.

Without warning, we were thrust into a new place—into your embrace. This community of Forward Day by Day readers loved and lifted us in prayer. In those early days, we held onto you and your prayers as we wept.

It’s a long process, this grief. A smell, a smile, a story, and we’re back on the edge of loss again. But through this community—built around reading and sharing God’s Holy Word, day by day—we remember that we are not alone. And that is amazing grace.

MOVING FORWARD: Pray with us today at 10 a.m., wherever you are. Know that we are praying for you, too.
