SUNDAY, April 8     2 Easter

Acts 4:31 When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

As a hospital chaplain, I encountered difficult situations every day. Once, as a huge family was spinning out of control following the unforeseen death of their patriarch, I found myself climbing onto a waiting room table, extending my hands, and saying, “Wait! I know it’s hard right now, but I need for everyone to take a couple of deep breaths. We’ll get through this together.” Holding the center for that family in that most tender of moments required being bold.

The disciples’ boldness in Acts offers a powerful witness and example for us. Christian boldness is always rooted in the Holy Spirit, empowering us to support the work of God in the world—work that looks like giving grace, making peace, sharing compassion, and offering mercy—all of which point us back to the eternal Reign of God.

MOVING FORWARD: Who looks like Jesus in your life? Write the person a note of thanks.
