Psalm 144:3 O LORD, what are we that you should care for us? mere mortals that you should think of us?

Forward Movement’s offices are on the third floor of the building that houses the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. The cathedral is next door and across the street is the tallest office building in downtown Cincinnati. I love working downtown—not just because of all the beautiful buildings, but also because of all the beautiful people I see each day.

Walking back to the office from lunch, a couple of ladies walked in front of me. The heat slowed them, as did the strollers they were pushing. The strollers were laden with groceries, diaper bags, and odds and ends that you’d find in a glove box of a car. One woman reached into a pocket to find a bottle of tea for her friend, who was fanning herself with her hand.

Suddenly, a very welcome breeze blew down the street. “Oooh, that felt great,” the tea recipient said. “It’s like right when I tell God I’m hot, God sends a breeze and answers my prayer.” She was standing right in front of the church. God answered her prayer because she believed God answered her prayer. Thanks be to God for caring for us mere mortals with breezes, kindness, and each other.
