TUESDAY, August 8

Mark 8:24 And the man looked up and said, “I can see people, but they look like trees, walking.”

Occasionally when I read this passage from Mark, I think that Jesus might have messed up the healing. But this miraculous event is much more true to life for me than many of the other healing stories reported in the gospels. Healing is a process. It takes time, and it changes your perspective.

While surfing this morning, I saw an older man named Ron who is a pillar of the local surf community. For the past year, Ron has been out of the sun and water as he struggled with melanoma. Today was his first day back out surfing. It was a beautiful summer morning—clear water, no wind, and schools of fish swimming in playful waves. Somehow, many of us had missed this beauty. Maybe we were lost in the proverbial trees of daily life. There were bills to pay. There were bigger waves other days. But this day was beautiful, and Ron’s healing vision showed us a beauty and grace we could not have seen without him. Ron may never be completely healed, but his healing eyes saw enough to guide us all.

MOVING FORWARD: Share a story of healing with a family member.
