SATURDAY, December 9

Jude 22-23 And have mercy on some who are wavering; save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies.

Yesterday’s reading from Jude focused on the people who are distracting folks from the work of the church; today Jude tells us that our job is simple: “Build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.” I need to hear these words again and again. I am prone to letting the distractions of our world, even the distractions of people in my church, displace the energy I might have used to work on my own relationship with Jesus. Jude’s reminder to me is twofold: Pray, and build up my faith.

Jude also addresses handling the “grumblers and malcontents” by having mercy on them—just as we hope and pray for Jesus’ mercy on us. Have mercy…even on those for whom we feel hate, whose very clothes seem tainted by their meanness. Even and especially on them.

Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy.

MOVING FORWARD: Have mercy on some of the malcontents in your life today.
