SUNDAY, December 9     2 Advent

Baruch 5:2-3 Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting; for God will show your splendor everywhere under heaven.

I walked into the store, sorted through a rainbow-covered rack, and selected a blue dress with gold embroidery. I stood in front of the mirror in the dressing room, willing myself not to sob with joy as I pulled the dress over my head and adjusted the sleeves and hem.

I had never felt more beautiful than I did in that quiet, solitary moment before I pulled back the curtain to show my wedding dress to my mother, grandmother, sisters-in-law, and soon-to-be mother-in-law. That great joy was eclipsed when I stood in front of my beloved on our wedding day. And I expect that subsequent feeling will be blown away by the way I will feel when I stand in front of God, with the splendor of heaven laid beneath my feet. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: When (or where) have you felt the splendor of God? Try writing a poem or painting a picture that reflects that feeling.
